Introduction to midrange and long range shooting program

This program is designed to provide an individual with the basic information and shooting experience necessary to participate in midrange and long range shooting matches organized by the Central Indiana Highpower Rifle Shooter’s club at Camp Atterbury.

This program is offered free of charge.  Register at CIHPRS.org under the New Shooter Program heading.  Registration closes on July 15.    A maximum of 20 individuals may attend, and will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.  The program is open to all shooters from the novice to the skilled marksman.

Both instructional time and actual shooting time is included in the program each of the two days of class.  The instructional portion of the program will include such topics as set up of the rifle and scope, fundamentals of marksmanship, zeroing the rifle, data gathering, and shooting position building.

The program is a two day event.  The first day, May 11, 2024,  will concentrate on the fundamentals of midrange shooting, while the second day, May 19, 2024,will concentrate on long range shooting.  The first day class is a prerequisite for the second day class.  Midrange is shot at distances of 300 to 600 yards, and long range is shot at 800 to 1000 yards.

Participants must bring with them to the class the following items:

  1.  A rifle and ammunition that is capable of shooting a 2 inch group at 100 yards, and is sighted in at 100 yards*.

  2.  At least 50 rounds of factory or handloaded ammunition.

  3.  A scope with target turrets is preferred, but not absolutely necessary. A scope of at least 15 power is necessary to comfortably shoot at targets beyond 600 yards.

  4.  A bipod or front rest (sandbags will work) for the rifle.

  5.  A rear bag for the rifle (sandbags will work).

  6.  A shooting mat or something else to lay on.  The ground may be damp, and all shooting will be done from the prone position.

  7.  Any comfort items such as water, snacks, elbow pads, etc.

  8. A smart phone or tablet.  All shooting will be done on electronic targets.

*Note that all rifles are not capable of shooting beyond 600 yards with a satisfactory level of accuracy (this can become a safety issue).  For example an AR-15 style rifle with a standard 16” barrel, shooting 55 grain bullets may not consistently reach the target at distances beyond 600 yards.  Questions concerning appropriate calibers for this program can be addressed to the program leader listed on the event registration page on the website.
